Cider with Evans

Waitrose

Waitrose are one of the only supermarkets that sell some decent own brand cider as far as I've found, but that's no huge surprise as it looks to be Weston's re-badged. Sometimes you can only get supermarket ciders so here they are:

Waitrose English Vintage

Medium Dry

Made by Westons and is possibly their vintage re-bottled.

Golden clear and sparkling

Fruity nose, sweet and a bit artificial. A bit too sharp and young

Not a bad deep rich apple flavour although sweet. Actually reminds me of treacle or a jam. No tannin to speak of which is not right for a vintage, and lacks any real depth. No wood or oak that I could tell despite claim it should be there. Long sweet aftertaste.

Ok if you like it sweet, but I think I’d struggle. Good in small glasses with your pud. It's a bit too strong for a sweet cider at 7.3% that’s had a lot of sugar added after I think.

If they think this is medium dry I don't want to know what they think sweet is...

I need to try another bottle of this as other reviews don't mention it being that sweet. Might have been my taste buds that evening

Waitrose Organic Vintage

Medium

Golden, clear and slightly sparkling.

Unusual dry bitter nose. Not bad but unusual.

Not a huge apple flavour for a vintage but it is there but the flavour is mainly a gentle nutter and smooth. Butterscotch in there as well as the wood. Little or no tannin. Nice long smooth finish. Medium or medium sweet to me.

Would like a bit more apple in there personally but it’s a perfectly good drop and it’s only 5% which is unusual in a supermarket cider as they like to punch high for some reason. Good little drop if you suddenly need to take a few to a party or BBQ.
