Cider with Evans

Torre Cider Farm

I visited Torre cider farm and went on one of their tasting tours (thanks to my brother Terry). Very interesting and very generous with the tastings after. I must confess I liked their cider, it's genuine farmhouse cider and has a decent depth. I got a couple of small plastics to take away and it tasted just as good when I got home (so it wasn't just the 'tasted good on holiday' effect. Well worth a visit if you're in the Somerset area - or you could stay there. Sadly no mail order available.

Traditional Scrumpy

Medium

Golden, slightly hazy and flat

Lovely smooth and deep fermented apple nose with slight honey tones.

Decently rich flavour initially with a slight tannin hit. Flavour is pretty clean straightforward farmyard cider without a huge amount of farmyard funk, so it's very easy going. The tanning gets stronger if you wash it round your mouth. Flavour becomes a fairly straight apple pulp taste as it goes along and into the refreshing aftertaste.

I like this, it's very easy drinking and refreshing without the huge amount of tannin you get with some farmyard ciders.

Sheep Stagger

Dry

Stagger, Sheep Stagger - It's not a typo

Dark yellow, slightly hazy and flat

Nice deep enticing fermented apple nose.

Quite a dry tannic hit initially, but the fruit lifts through that quickly to fill the mouth with a deep west country cider flavour. Dryness stays all the way through until the mouth watering aftertaste kicks in.

This is a straight dry scrumpy cider but it is a good one. Not overly dry and it's very easy to drink - too easy.

I also did an experiment here by seeing how long a plastic bottle lasted after buying it as I'd always been wary. This was a good month after buying and the taste hadn't turned at all, so I wouldn't worry about filling your socks if you visit the farm - it'll last (well technically, you may drink it faster)
