Cider with Evans

Silly Moo Cider

A genuine farmyard cider. Their cider shop is in one sheds around the side of the fine cow tepee. They only do 2 ciders but both are cracking. When I was visited them I was seriously tempted by their beef as well, but with a vegetarian partner, that may not have gone down well....

You can get this delivered nationally (it's not obvious on the site until you check out), but if you're in the East Sussex area it's worth making the diversion to say hi to the cows.

Cowfold cider

Medium

Mooooo!

Golden colour, slightly hazy and sparkling

Good big trad cider nose of fermented apple.

Slightly tart, fresh apple taste initially. Mellows quickly to a medium dry lingering aftertaste with a bit of pear drop. Leaves good mouth wetness.

Very decent 4.8 cider, and the lingering aftertaste would make this a good session cider.

Unfiltered cider

Medium

'Udderly flavourful' - indeed it is.

Light golden colour, slightly hazy, sparkling. Strangely not as hazy as you’d expect from unfiltered (perhaps I was careful enough in pouring)

Big traditional cider nose. Soft and sweet of fermenting apple.

Oh nice cider taste! Not hugely different from the Cowfold I’ll be honest, possibly a little less tart and a smidge more tannin I think and possibly slightly softer because of the remaining yeast. Again nice long medium dry aftertaste with a nice tingle on the tongue.

I think I slightly prefer it to the Cowfold but they're both lovely. You can get this sparkling in the bottle and flat in a bag-in-box and even in tins. Apparently it's better sparkling from bottle than from handpump and flat, although I haven't tried it myself.

Keeved

Medium Sweet

This was a one off batch that we tried back in 2020 but sadly they don't do at the moment.

Keeving if you don't know is a method of making sweeter cider by slowing or stopping the fermentation without killing it. Usually used in making French ciders but getting popular over there as well.

Golden yellow & Fizzy.

Good traditional cider smell.

Lots of apple flavour with a fair amount of tannin but not unpleasant. Lovely soft long aftertaste that doesn't get too sweet which makes it dangerously quaffable.

7.8 so not a session cider. Strong enough to go well with cheese. But not sweet enough for a desert. One off batch
