Cider with Evans

Sheppy's Cider

A Taunton, Somerset based cider farm with a wide variety of ciders. Originally started in 1816, the current maker is David Sheppy the 6th generation of makers in the family. Not only can you buy direct but also now quite widely available (I picked up 2 bottles from an off-licence in Cambridge.)

Original Cloudy

Medium Sweet

Straw yellow, fairly cloudy sparkling.

Sweet fresh apple nose but not much of it.

Big refreshing apple flavour fairly crisp light and sweet with a big punch of caramel. Mellows out quickly and you get a long lingering mouth watering aftertaste with the slightest hint of caramel with the apple.

This could be a seriously good session cider as it’s very Moreish.

If you like slightly sweeter ciders and you're looking for a nice refreshing one for a summer's day then this is very good (especially as you can get it at some supermarkets at the time of writing).

200

Medium Sweet

Golden clear and slightly sparkling

Not much of a nose, but you do get a bit of fresh apple skins and a slight smoke.

Decent straight buttery cider flavour with a good amount of fruit and a bit of tartness. Still quite refreshing though. Not a huge amount of tannin. Decent long smooth aftertaste with the slightest hint of caramel.

Not much else to say really, just straight medium (even though it's listed as medium sweet) cider that’s very drinkable. Oak matured but you don’t get much of that in the taste. I expected a bit more really but it is still very nice. 3/5 almost 4.

Dabinett

Medium

Golden yellow, clear with very little fizz.

Nice rich sweet cider nose with a bit of toffee.

Well balanced flavour. Nice crisp bittersweet apple up front, but smooths out quickly. Just the right amount of tannin for me, which gives an initial dryness but then leads to a nice long mellow mouth watering aftertaste. Overall flavour is of Dabinett red apple with possibly hints of caramel or something sweet anyway.

Dabinett flavour comes over nicely in this one and gives a nice easy to drink little cider.

Classic Draught

Medium Dry

Pale yellow clear sparkling

Nice fresh clean cider nose with a hint of farmyard in the background and Mango of all things possibly.

Oh nice fresh slightly bittersweet flavour. Juicy and fruity and crisp throughout with just the right mount of tannin (as in not too much). Bit short as aftertastes go but nice and fruity with a mouth watering finish making it very refreshing.

Nothing complex but a good solid session cider.

Kingston Black

Dry

Golden yellow, clear and slightly sparkling.

Big honey cider nose, smells lovely and different from your usual cider. You can actually smell the alcohol which perhaps is a warning at 6.5%

The taste again is different as it's a single variety. Slightly, ever so slightly tart. Dry without the tannin, fresh apple flavour and lovely and rich. Little bit of oak barrel, but not overpowering. Long aftertaste leaving the mouth watering and asking for more. They list it as a Dry, but I'd put it more Medium Dry to be honest.

Very very good single variety cider. Well worth searching out and trying. Very solid flavour, which would stand up well to strongly flavoured food.

Redstreak

Medium Sweet

Light golden clear, slightly sparkling.

Very mellow traditional cider nose.

Big fruity flavour fills the mouth nicely with a little bit of tofee in there. Sweetness kicks in and sticks to the teeth a bit but not too unpleasant. Lovely long apple aftertaste leaving a nice freshness in the mouth ready for more.

Very tasty and easy to drink. Being a single variety Somerset Redstreak it's a bit different from a normal blend. Well worth trying on a cold afternoon (as I did) as well as the usual hot summer's day.

Vintage Organic 2021

Medium

Amber clear and sparkling.

Decent traditional cider nose with a bit of honey.

Oh lovely buttery mellow flavour initially with lots of fruit, but then dries nicely with a fair amount of tannin. Decently long aftertaste, but stays fairly dry for me. After a handful of mouthfuls that heavy tannin seems to fade a bit to be a lot smoother.

I'd say more medium dry than medium, and a nice easy to drink cider. As with all of Sheppys, it's recommended.

Vintage Reserve 2021

Medium Dry

Golden, clear and slightly sparkling.

Heavy phenol nose on top of the apple with a bit of oak.

Not a subtle cider this one. Big red apple flesh up front then a huge tannin hit that slowly mellows to a long dryish aftertaste. Fair amount of fruit throughout with a bit of leather and oak. They say medium on the bottle but I’d call it mediUm dry.

One to take gently or with rich food this one.

Perry

Medium

Light, golden and sparkling

Sweet traditional Perry nose so not that pear like.

Deep flavour, but sweet for a medium in my opinion. Not a huge pear flavour but Perry which is slightly different. Strangely this reminds me of roast pork, no idea why. It has that richness with a honey sweetness. Long mellow aftertaste and quite refreshing. Sadly at 7% treat with care

Made up of 5 different perry apples including Blakeney Red, Hendre Huffcap and Red Pear. This is a traditional perry so don't expect the Conference pear flavour you get with some, it's a lot more subtle I think. Very good.
