Cider with Evans

Perrys Somerset cider

Single farm maker down in Somerset.

Fairly well known and not just for their wonderful postage stamp labels which are artworks in their own rights (and you can buy them on the site). Good variety of ciders, sticking very much to the traditional style of cidermaking. Some of them are very nice indeed and I wouldn't turn my nose up at any of them (especially the Puffin- and it's not just because I have a thing about Puffins...).

Barn Owl

Medium Dry

Light yellow. Crystal clear despite it being unfiltered.

Lovely fresh apple smell with ever so slight straw nose.

Clean apple juice flavour, Bittersweet but with a slight tartness and grab in the back of the throat. Ends up with a slightly dry aftertaste.

Dabinett

Medium Sweet

Golden yellow, ever so slightly cloudy mid yellow with a gentle fizz.

Good strong sweet single apple nose, obviously Dabinett.

Taste wise, smooth medium sweet initially but dries out very quickly with a fair astringency and tannin. It is a very simple Dabinett taste which means a little bit of a farmyard taste, but not nasty.

Would drink again but probably not buy in bulk

Gray Heron

Sweet

Blend of Redstreak and Dabinett apples.

Simple fresh nose.

Tingly on the tongue but a nice mellow bittersweet taste with strong apple. I find it quite dry personally with the tannin from the Dabinett but not unpleasant.

They call it sweet but I don't agree it's more medium

As with all of Perry's, quite drinkable. Quite earthy.

Puffin

Dry

Mid yellow pretty clear if poured carefully as it has a sediment. Bottle conditioned so slight fizz. Lovely full apples skin nose.

Nice simple smooth apple flavour that rolls off the tongue leaving a dry aftertaste on the tip just asking for more as is normal with Dabinett. Oak conditioned but you don't get much of the Oak.

6.5% so care needed as it is so smooth. Only a slight tartness to add an edge. Lovely, went through the case very quickly.

Redstreak

Medium

Single variety Redstreak using champagne yeast. You don't see Redstreak often so it's a bit different.

Yellow, slightly cloudy, good sparkle.

Nice gentle apple nose, not huge, but pleasant.

Lovely crisp dryish bite, with a good solid traditional juicy apple flavour. Lingering slightly tannic aftertaste.

Good, but possibly a little tannic for my taste

Tremlett

Medium Dry

Single variety Tremlett

Big lovely sweet apple nose.

Dry on the tongue and heavy tannin on the side and back of the throat. Nice mellow aftertaste though Despite the tannin I found it a pleasant drink

If this is what Tremlett apples taste like then more people should do single variety of it.

Vintage

Medium

Slightly ever so slightly hazy dark gold yellow. Ever so lightly sparkling.

Nice mellow apple nose.

Nice bittersweet. Full flavour but with a light apple aftertaste, you get a bit of the wood it was conditioned in as well as a slight caramel note.

Would be a good session cider but a short one at 6.7%
