Cider with Evans

JB of Maplehurst

The label explains that JB stands for the late John Batcheldor who passed away in 2018. It says that friends continue to brew the cider in his name.

No website for this maker (and google marks it as temporarily closed) so you either have to get it from online off licences or from local to the cider maker.

Dry

Dry

Golden colour, ever so slightly hazy and slightly sparkling.

Big crisp straw/farmyard nose.

Very dry and tannic on the initial flavour with a hint of wood, and it doesn't mellow hugely. It's not overly dry though so isn't a tough one to drink. There is some fruit in there that pops out and lingers to the end.

There's a nice long aftertaste that leaves a mouth watering aftertaste.

Dry ciders are not my favourite but this is not overly dry and is quite a nice little drop. Strong enough flavour to stand up to strongly flavoured food.

Medium

Medium

Copper colour, clear and fairly still

Big trad cider nose with lots of straw and a little bit of phenol tang.

Yup as expected thick rich flavour with lots of apple and a bit of straw. A fair amount of tannin and although it's a bit more than normal for a medium it is well balanced overall.

I’d put it on the dry side of medium and you can taste the strength in there. Decent aftertaste that makes it quite drinkable.

Medium Sweet

Medium Sweet

Dark almost bitter beer coloured and flat

Unusual nose and hard to put a finger on it. Not much fruit but a kind of muskiness that isn’t unpleasant.

Ooh very astringent initially for a medium sweet and that stays for a while. Eventually mellows to a medium feel with quite a decent bittersweet mature apple flavour. Very West country with that hint of straw and farmyard. Decent long mouth watering aftertaste.

Not bad at all but I can’t see how it’s medium sweet it’s actually on the dry side of medium IMO or perhaps I don’t want to try their dry!

Despite that it’s a decent drop and I’d be happy to have more.
