Cider with Evans

Isaac Cider

I bought a nice little mixed box from ths small cider maker in Beaminster, Dorset. The family that run it are descended from Sir Isaac Newton so hence the range

Alchemy

Medium

Golden clear and sparkling

Strong vanilla bean nose that swamps out the apple a bit but still nice. I'm not talking about the scented vanilla ice cream smell here, but the solid robust smell and taste you get from raw vanilla pods or paste.

That vanilla carries through to the flavour, and you get with it a little raisin and a touch of pear as well as the obvious fresh apple. Little or no tannin but it is balanced with a nice little acidity from the Browns apple. Shortish aftertaste but very nice.

A good refreshing little cider. Quite interesting and well worth trying.

Refraction

Medium Sweet

Dark golden, clear and sparkling

Sweet apple nose with a strong hint of raisin.

Oh smooth. Just the right side of medium sweet for me with lots of bittersweet body to it. Obviously caramel and cooked apple as for most sweet ciders but there's a bit of a tannin astringency in there as well because of the Dabinett that balances it out nicely. A little hint of peach jam for me as well.
There's a good-strange earthy taste in the background - almost a faint mushroom umami is the best way I can describe it which makes it a bit different. (Looking it up later, some people describe Dabinett as having a black tea tone which may be it)

It has a long complicated aftertaste that changes and has a certain level of a dry finish to it because of the tannin.

That's very nice for a medium sweet and well worth trying

Anti Gravity

Medium Dry

Copper coloured clear and flat

Deep apple nose with a slight honey/mead tang

Oh smoooth. That is so smooth you could slide off your chair drinking it. Decent apple flavour but possibly a little bit watery and a bit lacking in oomph when it comes to the qpple sharpness. Just a hint of tannin but again that hint of honey / mead to balance it out. Decent aftertaste and very refreshing

Very easy to drink but a tad watery flavour wise. Very smooth but lacks any real bite to make it more interesting. Not bad at all though.

Calculus

Medium Dry

Golden, clear and slightly sparkling.

Fresh nose, slightly acidic with lots of apple skins. A small bit of honey to soften it a bit.

Dry initially with a fair amount of apple pulp. Medium amount of tannin but the overall impression is of crisp and refreshing. The flavour is a bit watery though and there isn't much in there to be honest

Not quite as good as the other Isaac ciders I have to say. It's a bit watery and lacks any real body, but it is perfectly drinkable and is quite refreshing. Nothing wrong with it per se but not earth shattering.
