Henney's Cider

So you see Henney's Autumn Gold cider in supermarkets left right and centre but they actually do a wider range. I was very impressed with the England's Pride and need to get hold of the others to try them out.

England's Pride

Medium

Light golden colour, clear and slightly sparkling

Big apple nose with a slight hint of caramel, well actually a fair amount.

Huge bittersweet apple flavour but smooth. Deep, lots of caramel and no tannin, but there is a bit of dryness to balance the sweet though. Long refreshing aftertaste.

Very easy to drink but has enough going on to be interesting. That’s a very nice drop and on the dryer side of medium.

Certainly one of the better supermarket ciders and well worth getting a box for hot summer days.

Autumn Gold

Medium Sweet

Available pretty much from every supermarket. Sometimes lets face it supermarket cider is all you can get hold of so it's worth reviewing them I suppose.

Light golden colour, slight haze and sparkling.

Decent sour apple nose with a bit of yeast.

Big bitter dryish hit initially but mellows quickly to give a nice sharp cider with lots of fresh pulp flavour. Bittesharp but with some sweetness in there to mellow it out. Shortish sherbet like aftertaste leaving a nice tingle.

A very decent little session cider that. They say medium sweet but I’d put it nearer a medium and I think that would be a nice easy drop to drink for a session as there’s enough contrast to make it work. I’d drink it cold though.

Vintage Still cider

Medium

Golden, clear and yes indeed still.

Fruity sweet nose.

Interesting flavour. Not the smooth rich flavour I expected but a much more tangy tone. Slightly acidic but in a good way. Mellows nicely in the aftertaste. Not a huge amount of Tannin for a vintage cider.

Even with the acidic zing I can't call this particularly refreshing. It's perfectly drinkable and a bit different, but I think it needs food to balance out the acidity, it's not one I think to quaff on its own.
