Cider with Evans

Gwynt y ddraig

Gwynt Y Ddraig. Based in Llantwit Fardre, South Wales. Until recently this was about the only decent cider you could get in Wales, so for the last 20 years it's been my constant companion when I went home as long as you could find it.

Now things have changed and it seems that most of the pubs (certainly in Pembrokeshire) now sell it in bottles. You can also get it in most of the supermarkets down there. Yippee.

Having drunk it for so long it has become a firm favourite so I don't apologise for giving it good reviews all round.

A good range of solid traditional ciders. I commend them to the jury.

Autumn Magic

Sweet

Rust red, fairly clear and slightly sparkling. Looks a bit like my Sloe Gin.

Not a natural blackberry nose, but it is berry.

Yeah, berry flavour. I doubt you'd recognise it as blackberry unless you were told. I can't say it's artificial but just generic berry. No real note of the cider unless you swill it round the mouth where a fairly tangy cider comes out.

Not unpleasant and if you want a berry cider it's fine, but it's a bit Blackberry squash like for me

Black Dragon

Medium Dry

Dark golden yellow clear, very little fizz.

Big yeasty smell, almost smells like an old style Welsh bitter.

Taste is mellow and buttery, with the slightest bite at the back of the throat which makes it quite refreshing. Good old style cider apple flavour that fills the mouth. My partner described it as having a slightly bitter molasses flavour with a slightly bitter aftertaste which I don't find unpleasant I must say.

Perhaps because of the bitterness it strangely reminded me of a bitter lemon top (but with apple of course).

Smooth slight bittersweet. Goes down very easily.

Celtic Warrior

Sweet

Golden slightly hazy flat

Very little nose to this one

Sweetish thick flavour with lots of apple pulp and hints of vanilla. Very little tannin and a nice long smooth slightly smokey aftertaste.

They say sweet but I’d call it medium sweet myself. Very drinkable but I'd struggle after more than a couple I admit. Good drop though.

Dabinett

Medium

Light golden, clear and sparkling

Simple Dabinett nose. Not huge but you get the fresh apple.

The flavour though is much stronger. You get a big caramel with vanilla hit up front but without the sweetness and that's really the flavour throughout. No tannin as you'd expect from a Dabinett so it ends up being quite single flavour really.

Bit of a shame this one. It's perfectly fine but that caramel is all the flavour you get, you don't get ny of the balance and complexity you get from other Dabinett single varieties. On the other hand it's perfectly drinkable.

Dog Dancer

Medium Dry

Golden clear with a decent head from the barrel

Mouth filling slightly sour fruitiness originally but sweetening in the middle but not in a particularly nice way. Very bittersweet so you get honey on the tip of the tongue but a fairly harsh bitterness in the throat. Not an ideal mix I think.

Yeah not quite the right balance for me I have to say.

Farmer's Pride

Medium Dry

Yellow cloudy and flat from the cask.

Straight soft sweetish farmyard nose

Flavour is the same really. Soft apple pulp with a slight sharpness but a fair amount of sweetness with little or no tannin. Fairly long dryish aftertaste. Bit watery in taste

Nothing bad about it but nothing special as well. Quite sweet for medium dry and I think I’d struggle to drink many.

Fiery Fox

Medium

Golden, clear and flat

Not a huge nose but slightly sour fermented apple flesh, nice

Interesting flavour. Quite tart bitter sharp taste with a fairly decent tannin hit but has a soft mellow medium surround to the sharpness which balances out nicely. Drier end of medium as it has a certain level of astringency to it.

Drinks quite easily I have to say but it does have a dry bitterness that may not be to everybody’s taste if they're expecting a straight medium.

Gold Medal

Medium Dry

Gwynt Y Ddraig's first cider, wining the CAMRA Gold medal in 2004

Golden yellow, very clear, slight fizz.

Farmyard apple nose, very strong and earthy.

Ooh lovely bittersweet taste with a light lingering aftertaste. Nice robust taste with a bit of a bite.slight melon possibly. Very nice so drink with care at 7%.

This is often my post Christmas lunch cider, it's that kind of cider: drink on a full stomach and relax.

Available only on draft or in a 10/20L box

Golden yellow, slightly hazy and flat.

Rich fermented apple with a fair bit of 'farmyard' with a slight tartness on the nose.

Nice bittersweet flavour, with a good golden syrup sweetness in the aftertaste. Little bit floral. Quite nice little medium.

Orchard Gold

Medium

Nice golden colour, clear slight fizz.

Nice musty apple nose.

Taste is simple but very nice. Smooth. Not much of a bite and a pleasant appley aftertaste. Very refreshing really good session cider.

I’d get more, well actually I have had several times. For years this was the only cider I could get when I was at hme in Wales.

Perry Vale Pear Cider

Medium

A blend of 3 different pears.

Clear , very slightly sparkling

A very subtle light pear nose but very nice.

Good strong straight Pear flavour though with a nice long aftertaste. They've done a good job of making a medium Pear cider that isn't sweet and unpleasant. Nice and refreshing, perfect for a summer day after a long walk on the Pembrokeshire coast. Get more.

Scrumpy

Medium

Dark golden colour good fizz. Fairly clear.

Fresh apple nose. But with that scrumpy overtones.

Bittersweet nice and clean crisp taste. Quite a deep apple flavour that catches the back of the throat. Bit of a pear overtone and quite sweet for a scrumpy.

Quite easy to drink but nothing huge jumps out. They say medium but I’d say medium sweet really

Two Trees Farmhouse Perry

Medium

Only available on draught.

Golden, slightly hazy flat

Sweetish straight Perry nose.

Good decent normal Perry flavour. Very smooth lingering flavour with a bit of pear drop but not too artificial. Bit of honey on the taste. No tannin.

Goes down fairly easy but on the sweeter side of medium so I don’t think I could have too many. Perfectly good but nothing outstanding.
