Cider with Evans

Broadoak cider

Another new cider maker for me, based in the heart of Somerset (between Bath and the Mendips). A nice range of ciders and flavoured ciders. They don't sell in bottles but they do sell 3L bag-in-the-box which isn't quite as environmentally friendly but isn't a bad way to try a variety of ciders

KB Cider

Dry

Very dark copper, almost clear (but don't expect to see through it) and flat from the bag.

Big rich traditional farmyard cider nose with an unmissable smell of alcohol on top. You know this is a pokey one.

Oh that is mellow and bang on. Very rich apple flavour with a strong sherry overtone and a small amount of leather. The flavour is obviously Kingston black which I'm particularly fond of. Thick almost oily texture to the cider as a whole and a lovely long honey/buttery aftertaste that goes on and on. There's a lot going on in this cider.

Not one for gulping this one but it's so nice and easy to drink it's hard to resist drinking a lot which is not good news at 7.5% Very recommended and one of the nicer ones I've tried in a while.

Perry

Sweet

Very pale yellow (almost colourless), clear and flat (from the box)

Full bodied deep perry nose with a fair amount of pear drops.

Huge sweetish initial perry flavour with again a fair amount of pear drops which makes it a bit artificial. Has a little bit of dryness to balance out. Mellows to a medium flavour and a long aftertaste.

Nothing that interesting going on but perfectly good and refreshing to drink. It's sweet but I didn't find it totally sickly sweet. I think it would be much better really cold. Be careful when drinking it, the taste does mask the high alcohol content.

Re-tasted Cold: Yes much better well chilled. You lose a bit of the nose, but the flavour comes out much better and is very drinkable.

Pheasant Plucker

Medium

"I'm not a Pheasant plucker, I'm a Pheasant plucker's son..."

Review number 200!

Amber almost orange, hazy, flat (out of BiB)

Unusual nose but not unpleasant had to put a finger on what it is

Again an unusual flavour. There’s apple there, tiny bit of tannin, bit of caramel, but I also think under-ripe mango which gives it a very interesting balance. Light and mellow flavour overall. Bittersweet apples used and that comes through. Lovely long aftertaste and the apple comes out to leave a nice mouth watering finish.

I really like it because it is so different, but good different. 4/5

Rhubarb

Medium Sweet

Very light rhubarb pink , very slightly hazy and flat (from BiB)

Huge rhubarb nose but a bit artificial – very much like rhubarb and custard sweets.

Flavour wise, yes again that big rhubarb and custard flavour, but with a little tartness to balance it all out. Nice long lingering rhubarb taste in the mouth and is very refreshing.

Made by blending rhubarb juice which explains the strength of flavour. This is a damn good, refreshing Medium sweet cider.

I suggest serving this one really chilled though as I think it’s one of those that benefits from it.

Moonshine

Medium sweet

Straw colour, flat and hazy

Tart nose of wild yeast

Very tart/sour and crisp hit initial that mellows quickly to a sweetish fruity flavour with a hint, just a hint of coriander seed. Nice long sweet wet aftertaste.

Not a bad drop at all and goes down nice, especially if you like the more tart sour taste. It's very drinkable to be warned at 7.5%
