Cider with Evans

Ty Gwyn

Ty Gwyn was one of the first mail order ciders I tried when I started this little quest of trying as many ciders as possible, but that was before I had the idea of the site and it's taken a few yesrs for me to get round to doing them properly - Sorry Alex.

Ty Gwyn means White House in welsh so that gives you a clue that the maker is in Wales. He does a nice little selection of 4 single variety ciders and a Perry. As seems to be the norm now, the mail order experience was good, and Alex the owner was really helpful when I messed up last time and ordered it too close to me going away on holiday - duh. If you're in mid-Wales we also found it in some of the supermarkets down there.

Kingston Black

Medium Dry

Single variety Kingston Black cider.

Dark yellow, very slight haze. Big sharp apple nose.

Dry farmyard flavour with lots of fruit initially. Mellows to a big robust buttery flavour, rolls off the tongue lovely and leaves a slight toffee flavour in the mouth. Well balanced tannin and has a long mouth watering aftertaste.

I’d say more medium than medium dry. Very refreshing.

Top notch cider. Very easy to drink so take care at 6%. The other ciders from Ty Gwyn were pretty good from memory so I recommend getting a mixed box.

Blakeney Red and Conference Perry

Medium Dry

Light golden, slight haze and a slight sparkle.

Lovely floral fermented pear nose. Not hugely pear like but it's there.

Mature pear taste. Not artificial pear drop like many. It's a bittersweet Pear flavour, buttery on the tongue and very full of flavour. Little bit of tartness there to make it interesting as well. I also think there's a slight woodyness in there which is interesting No tannin as normal from pear, but it's well balanced, not too dry and not too sweet. Decently long flavourful aftertaste that leaves a nice refreshing mouth feel. I'd certainly agree it's about medium dry which is a nice change from the normal pear sweetness.

I really like this, and went through my 16 bottles far too quickly. It's not got that huge pear flavour of many but that is no bad thing as they can be hard to drink many of. This on the other hand is a good medium dry cider that tastes of pears which is cracking. Very easy to drink, but there's enough in there to make it interesting

Browns

Medium Sweet

Golden, clear and slightly sparkling

Farmyard, tobacco and fermented apple nose. Browns does not smell that inviting ...

Taste wise though it’s a different story. This is a decently apple flavoured cider mainly of pulp. Little bit of tobacco, generally smooth but there’s a little sharpness in the background. There’s no tannin but there is a little dryness on the teeth. You don’t get the obvious lemon citrus you normally get from browns but you do get some kind of citrus in there.

Fairly simple gentle aftertaste.

Again a very easy to drink cider that you could happily drink lots of. It does lack a little of the interesting sharpness you normally get from Browns but that does mean it’s more drinkable in bulk.

Dabinett

Medium

Golden, clear and slightly sparkling

Big rich eating apple nose with some caramel and honey Fresh Dabinett surprisingly

Very bittersweet. The bitterness sits on the back of the throat and the sweetness sits on top of the tongue. Flavour wise, fresh apple pulp with a lot of minerality. Mellows and sweetens as it goes through the long refreshing aftertaste.

Very easy to drink and a good single apple cider. You could easily drink lots of that.

Harry Masters Jersey

Medium Dry

Light golden colour, clear with a slight sparkle

Huge sherry like apple nose.

Nice fresh apple flavour, like raw cooking apple but not so tart. That sherry like flavour is there with hints of vanilla and slight elderflower. Fair amount of tannin to balance it out and to give a bit of dryness. There's a long aftertaste leaving a lot of fruit in the mouth.

Lovely one that one. As he says a complex bittersweet flavour and I have to agree. Not only is it interesting but it also goes down very well. Tip top.
