Cider with Evans

South Downs Cider Company

I can't say much about this maker I admit as I've only tried 2 of their ciders.

Based near Lewes in East Sussex. Eastern counties style not surprisingly which is a mix of eating apples.

This is another one that doesn't sell directly to the public, but you can get it through many of the on-line cider sites, or you can get it in a few farm shops in East Sussex which is where I picked up my samples.

Classic Dry

Dry

This one doesn't appear on their site anymore but from the description it doesn't sound too different from their Dry.

Pale yellow, slightly cloudy, flat.

Sour apple nose. Reminds me of baked beans strangely (possibly the vinegar in the beans?)

Tart almost sour taste and fairly sharp initially but with plenty of fruit (bit like crab apple but not that sour). Sourness goes quite quickly to a mellow lingering juicy apple aftertaste.

Too sour for me though to drink in bulk but it isn't bad per se. If you like a tart dry cider this one is for you as it has lots of flavour and a lovely aftertaste.

Sucker Punch

Medium Dry

Pale yellow hazy, still.

Gueuze sour, grapefruit nose and lots of it.

Very tart/sharp sour initially (strangely it reminds me of Cockles in pickle) only smoothing very slightly, and the acidity stays. Not a strong apple taste per se until quite late in the aftertaste.  Ends up slightly mouth watering and juicy but that takes a while. A dry bitterness stays at the back of the tongue.

Very unusual and I had to say I struggled with the tartness. Don’t think I’d have it again I admit. As the Cider Expert website puts it ‘has  a challenging sourness'
