Cider with Evans

Somerset Orchard Garden Cider

Not much to say about this cider maker yet, I'll say more when I try them. I came across them in Wells when I was on holiday there. Sadly I didn't see any reference to an online shop on their site so they may be difficult to get hold of at the moment.

Bonwell Breeze

Dry

Light copper colour, hazy with a slight head and decent fizz

Nice fresh apples nose reminds me a bit of the apple with sparkling water drink popular in Germany

Doesn’t taste like that though. Decently dry without being astringent. Mature cider flavour with slightly bitter overtones especially in the aftertaste. It mellows quickly to a nice long aftertaste with the dryness lasting a long time but eventually goes to leave a juicy feel.

Very nice Indeed and a seriously well balanced dry.

Great Yellow

Dry

This is a blend of vintage cider apples and rhubarb.

Dark golden yellow, slightly hazy and flat

Fruity rich nose with a touch of honey. Strange for a dry

Oh but the flavour is indeed dry and very interesting. Quite sharp with an initial flavour of blueberries with the apple as opposed to obvious rhubarb. Lots of dry tannin with a fair amount of ash like minerals. Aftertaste is quite short but then the subtle rhubarb does come through.

If you like dry and sharp then you’ll like this. I think I’d struggle with more than a pint but possibly not.

I personally prefer my rhubarb ciders with a more obvious rhubarb flavour I must admit.

Misty Gold Cloudy Bramley

Dry

Pale straw colour, clear and very little fizz.

Huge fresh bramley apple nose, with the slightest hint of sulphite.

Tart or acidic cooking apple flavour, with a fairly floral tone to it. Very straightforward slightly tannic taste, that mellows nicely (which is where the floral really comes out) and leaves a nice refreshing toffee apple aftertaste. Not overly tannic even when you swill it round your mouth and is a nice balance between the huge acidity and the more gentle middle and aftertaste.

Very nice indeed and you could easily throw that down your throat on a nice warm day, but it's robust enough to stand up to food.
