Cider with Evans

Iford Cider

Not much I can say about these newish cider makers from near Bath. Their website is slightly low on details: I picked my cans up from the Wobblegate cider tap in Sussex but they do have an online shop.

Cloudgazer

Medium

Dark straw yellow, ever so slightly hazy, sparkling.

Very tart aroma, almost nettle like on top of the fresh apple.

Very interesting taste with lots going on as you'd expect from a wild yeast cider. It's not as tart as you expect from the nose which is a good thing. First thing you get is a big hit of tobacco and wood. You then get a large dry herbal flavour (nettle for me) which mellows to a nice long watery aftertaste. You don't really get apple at all apart from right at the end of the aftertaste.

Yes an interesting one. It's hard to judge whether it's medium or sweet because of the flavour profile so I've erred on Medium, some say sweet. Quite easy to drink despite the strange flavour profile.

Rushwood

Medium Dry

Dark golden, clear and slightly sparkling

Lovely rich fermented apple nose with a touch of honey. Slight metallic notes but nothing off-putting.

Smooth deep bittersweet flavour with lots of pulp and slight woody notes. Very little tannin but it does have a slight astringency. Nice long lingering but refreshing aftertaste.

Very nice little cider this, very drinkable and I'm sure if you drank it really cold it would be a good little summer thirst quencher.

Somerset Sahara

Dry

Golden, cloudy and flat

Not a huge nose but there is a gentle fruitiness there.

Fresh crisp tart cooking apple fruit flavour with some gentle tannin but quite dry and astringent. Not the easiest to drink because of the dryness, but it does go down and is refreshing once the initial dryness goes.

Wild Juice

Medium

Very dark copper, almost bitter beer brown, pretty clear and slightly sparkling.

Nice big nose, almost of a beer from a distance, but stick your nose in it and you get that slightly yeasty fermented cider with a bit of cooked apple. Nice and mellow and inviting.

Oh, very nice and smooth. Lots of bittersweet fruit, but not much tannin. Small amount of caramel and toffee in the cooking apple flavour. Roll it over your tongue and you get a taste a bit like a balsamic vinegar but without the acidity. Dries out a little in the lingering aftertaste.

This is a very easy to drink cider and for a sweetish cider there's a lot going on so well worth trying.
