Cider with Evans

Gethins Pembrokeshire Cyder

Probably the closest Cyder maker to my home in Wales based in the little village of Maenclochog although I think they brew in nearby St Dogmaels. Well worth reading their About page where they talk about using very old apple varieties bought over by the Norman monks of the abbey there.
Their cyders won champion cider of Wales back in 2012, which is not bad. I tried their cider in 2022 and again in 2024 and I thought the cider had improved in those 2 years (it was good anyway), and that's always a good sign.

Sadly they don't do mail order and I've yet to find someone that will mail them, but that just gives you an excuse to visit Pembrokeshire. I picked up 3 bottles of their Cyder in the Tafarn Zinc (Zinc Tavern) in nearby Rosebush which is a must visit pub if you're ever in Pembrokeshire, but there are several more stockists if you look on their site.

Original

Medium

Blend of Pembrokeshire dessert apples and Monmouthshire bittersweet cider apples.

Toasted the Queen's death and the new King with this one.

Golden, very very slight haze, slight sparkle

Lovely big nose. Hard to put a finger on it, it's very different. Slight sweetness of some kind from the desert apples but a bit different from normal.

Taste is lots of apples with a slight sweetness initially and a bit of burnt sugar but drying out quickly. That dryness is fairly quickly replaced by mouth watering aftertaste.

Not bad, goes down well but I think I prefer the Penny Farthing of theirs. It's on the dry side of Medium I think, I would certainly call it medium dry.

Pennyfarthing

Medium

Tried this one again in 2024: Slight honey-ness to the flavour but a little bit of tartness to balance it out but you still get that cooked apple flavour. This is a cider you could drink all night as there's lots going on in there and well worth the effort to get hold of. It seems to be getting nicer by the year

From 2022: Made from Pembrokeshire apples only. Some very unusual apples in the mix, see the picture of the bottle.

Yellow, crystal clear, good fizz.

Not a huge nose, but slightly floral.

Nice flavour. A traditional cider flavour but with a good fresh taste. Bittersweet very slight cooked apple flavour from the desert apple.

Very drinkable and refreshing; rolling off the tongue nicely. Good aftertaste that lingers. Would certainly drink more.

Boneshaker

Medium Dry

I tried this again in 2024 and was much nicer drop I think. This year a bit more honey in it but still a very good strong cider. Dangerous as you don’t feel it.

From 2022: Made from a majority of Monmouthshire bittersweet cider apples with Pembrokeshire dessert apples to blend.

Golden clear and sparkling.

Fresh sharp apple nose.

Decent farmyard cider taste quite mellow. Not as crisp as the nose would make you expect. Fair amount of tannin but not offensive. Good tingle on the tongue and quite refreshing. The Dabinett though tends to dominate and make this a little bit more one-dimensional than the others I feel.

I personally prefer PennyFarthing just but this one is up there as well.
