Cider with Evans

Fair Oak Cider

A herefordshire based family cider producer still using a horse drawn old stone mill - does that mean it's technically not vegan therefore? :-). They think they're the only producer still doing that, so they should be encouraged to keep to the old traditions.

Thy don't have an online shop and I got my bottles at the Cider museum in Hereford, but they have a list of stockists on their site. Well worth looking out for it when you're down that way.

Browns

Dry

Yellow, ever so slightly hazy and flat

Big slightly sour citrussy nose, mainly smelling of grapefruit.

Lots of grapefruit and lemon in the flavour which obliterates any apple really. Small amount of tannin and generally well rounded. Fairly sharp obviously and leads to a nice little lingering aftertaste leaving citrus on the palette.

Very different. Browns is always described as citrussy but this is the first one ive tried where it’s that obvious. Very good if you like grapefruit but sadly it’s not one of my faves, but fair enough it’s good.. I think you could down quite a few of these if this is your kind of flavour

Dabinett

Medium

Lots of sediment in this one – I'd leave it to settle if I were you.

Golden, still and slightly hazy after settling and flat.

Mellow smell of well fermented apple pulp with a touch of yeast and phenols

Dabinett taste obviously. Fairly rich smooth apple flavour and slightly floral, Bittersweet tone, as in you get that bitter feel and catch in the throat but you get the sweetness at the same time. Medium tannin with a slight tartness. Overall fairly well balanced for a single variety. Decent aftertaste that grabs the back of the throat nicely leaving a refreshed mouth feel.

Says sweet on the bottle but I’d put it much more towards the medium end and with the tannins many would call it drier than that.

That is not a bad cider at all and you’d have a couple of pints of that no problem if not more. Much easier to drink than many Dabinett single varieties I’ve tried.

Medium Dry

Medium Dry

Golden, clear and flat from the bottle but beware the sediment.

Interesting nose. Cigarette smoke of all things, wild yeast and a bit of apple in the background

Tannic, farmyard apple taste. This is an old fashioned country cider no doubts, it is crushed by a horse drawn mill and you can almost taste the hessian in there. That initial tannic flavour mellows nicely but you only get a fairly short aftertaste without much apple.

Decent enough old fashioned cider but won't set the world alight.
